Description of HDPE marine pipes

Several key factors are essential for selecting the optimal marine HDPE pipes, including the pipe’s Standard Dimension Ratio (SDR), the type of HDPE material used, the configuration of ballast blocks, and the internal pressure requirements.
HDPE piping systems are highly suitable for a variety of onshore and offshore applications. They are non-toxic and approved for the transport of potable water. Due to their high fatigue strength, HDPE pipes and pipe strings can be efficiently lowered to the seabed during offshore installations. Additionally, HDPE’s resistance to corrosion and the absence of internal welding beads in the continuously extruded pipeline ensure long-term operation with minimal head loss, thereby conserving energy. With high abrasion resistance and shock resilience, polyethylene pipes are superior to steel, GRP, or concrete pipes for many applications.
Polyethylene pipelines can be fused into long sections onshore, where labor costs are lower, then filled with air. The assembled floating pipe is subsequently towed into position and lowered to the seabed, often within a single day, reducing expensive marine construction and weather-related risks.

Advantages of HDPE marine pipes

HDPE pipes are highly suitable for marine installations, with two primary production techniques: solid wall and helicoidally welded (structured pipes).

Abrasion Resistance

HDPE pipes exhibit superior abrasion resistance compared to most other pipe materials, making them ideal for slurry pipelines in the mining industry. The degree of abrasion depends on the size, shape, and concentration of solids in the slurry, as well as the impact angle and flow characteristics.

Chemical Resistance

HDPE pipes are resistant to a wide range of chemicals, salts, acids, and alkalis. However, petroleum products may cause slight swelling of the material. Wetting agents and strong oxidizing liquids can reduce the stress cracking resistance of HDPE, shortening the pipe’s lifespan. Detailed information on chemical resistance can be found in tables published by PE resin manufacturers and plastic pipe organizations.

Lightweight

With a density of only 0.95 kg/dm³, HDPE pipes are significantly lighter than steel or concrete pipes, allowing them to float in water without assistance. This lightweight nature facilitates easy transportation and installation.

Cost Savings and Operational Reliability

For onshore job sites, shorter lengths of HDPE pipes can be delivered via truck, train, or bulk shipment. These pipes can be connected using butt fusion or flange connections (with pre-welded stub ends and backing rings), reducing on-site welding work and enabling quick assembly. This results in shorter installation times and cost savings. Our reputation for delivering complete system solutions is built on over a decade of global application engineering experience.

Proven Leak-Tight Fittings

A full range of fittings made from high-quality resins and certified under the ISO9001 Quality Management System can be offered. Fittings include butt fusion fittings, customized fabricated fittings, and unconventional fittings, essential for connecting straight pipes, adapting to different sizes or shapes, and regulating flow. A wide range of large diameter fittings for butt fusion or electrofusion welding can be supplied, including stub ends, flanges, reducers, bends, tees, and intake heads, ensuring strong connections with excellent leakage and wear resistance.

This product flyer is intended for reference purposes.  It should not be used in place of the advice from a licensed Professional Engineer.  Nominal pressure (PN) is based on C = 1,25 and an operating temperature of 20°C.  Weight is calculated using DN and Minimum wall plus 6% for use in estimating fluid flow. Actual ID will vary. When designing components to fit the pipe ID, refer to pipe dimensions and tolerances in the applicable pipe manufacturing specification.  To obtain pressure in psi, multiply bar by 14.5 (1 bar ≈ 14.5 psi).  Additional information is available at www.bingopipes.com.

      Application

Applications of High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Marine Pipes and Fittings

Since the early 1960s, shortly after its introduction, polyethylene (PE) piping has seen increasing use in various marine applications, including effluent outfalls, river and lake crossings, and fresh and saltwater intakes. One of the primary reasons for selecting PE is its immunity to galvanic corrosion, which is particularly problematic for conventional metallic piping materials when exposed to the combination of air and water, especially seawater.

      HDPE pipelines are ideal for:
      1. Seawater Air Conditioning (SWAC)
      2. Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC)
      3. Marine Outfalls
      4. Aquaculture and Mariculture
      5. Industrial Cooling and Power:
      6. Waste heat power cycles
      7. Power plant cooling
      8. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) process cooling
      9. Chemical process cooling

Other industrial processes with large cooling loads
Intake and Outfall Pipelines: Ranging from 6″ to 144″ in diameter, suitable for both inshore and offshore installations
Bridge and Pier Construction and Rehabilitation
      Power Plant Projects
Intake and Discharge Pipeline Construction: For cooling water systems
Penetration, Inspection, and Cleaning: Of pipelines and approach tunnels
Remedial Installation: Of zebra mussel protection systems
